What does the study say?
Egg consumption can help to keep your cognitive decline in check, according to a recent study published in the journal Nutrients. It advises that eating eggs can make your brain sharper. Through the study, it was observed that higher egg consumption led to better cognitive performance as one ages.
In the study, a group of 890 adults aged more than 55 years, 357 men and 533 women, were observed. They were questioned regarding their intake of eggs from 1988–1991 via a food frequency questionnaire. Besides this, their cognitive performance was also assessed through two visits where they were tested for language, orientation, attention, recall, executive function, mental flexibility. There was a gap of four to five years between these two visits. It was seen that men ate more eggs than women. They ate eggs two to four times, or even more than five times a week, while women either did not eat eggs, or ate one to three eggs a month. Also, 14 percent of men and 16.5 percent of women reported to have never eaten eggs, while 7.0 percent of men and 3.8 percent of women said they ate eggs more than five times a week.
The study revealed that egg consumption was associated with less decline in cognitive abilities in women. It was seen that egg consumption also improved semantic memory in women. There was a lack of cognitive observed in women. In women, this decrease in decline was by 0.1 percent. The study claimed that egg consumption does not have any detrimental effects. It stated that the intake of eggs can play a part in the maintenance of cognitive function. Thus, the study recommends eating eggs make your brain sharper.
